Describe an area of science you’re interested in. You should say

– when you first heard about it
– where it happened
– how you heard about it

and explain why you are interested in this area of science.

Answer

You know, genetics has always been this captivating puzzle for me. I can trace this interest back to high school, in Ms. Johnson’s biology class. She had this knack for taking these mind-boggling concepts and turning them into fascinating tales. So, there I was, sitting in class one day, and she starts unraveling the mystery of DNA – you know, that tiny code that’s like the instruction manual for life.

Can you imagine? In those microscopic strands, all the things that make us who we are – from the way we smile to why some of us can taste bitterness more intensely. It’s like we’re all characters in this incredible genetic novel, each chapter telling a different story about our ancestry.

But what really got me hooked was the idea of inheritance. You look at your parents, your grandparents, and suddenly, everything clicks. I realised that my love for music and Dad’s knack for fixing things – it’s all written in our genes. It’s like we inherit this unique family legacy, not just in traits but in the quirks and talents that make us special.

The real magic happens when you think about how this knowledge is shaping our world. Personalised medicine, for instance – it’s mind-blowing. Doctors can tailor treatments based on our genetic makeup, ensuring they’re not just effective but also safer for us. And agriculture? Genetically modified crops are revolutionising the way we grow food, making it more resilient and accessible to millions.

Every time I dive into this genetic world, I feel like I’m on this incredible adventure. It’s not just about science; it’s about understanding ourselves and our place in the grand scheme of things. It’s like peering into the code of life itself. The more I learn, the more I’m convinced that genetics isn’t just a subject – it’s a journey into the very essence of what makes us human.

IELTS test in Ghana – October 2023 (General Training)

Writing test

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You have been looking for a job and have come across a job advertisement for a part-time position. Write a letter to the employer. In your letter

– explain why you need the job
– describe your skills and qualifications
– say what days you are available

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Nowadays people take photographs and record videos of their social activities. Why are they doing this? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this activity?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Part 1 (Interview)

– What is your full name?
– Where are you from?
– Do you work or study?
– Are you interested in science?
– Do you have a favorite science subject?
– Did you learn science in school?
– Do you think science lessons are important?
– Do you know of any technology that is helpful in daily life?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Talk about a journey you went on. You should say

– who went there with you

and explain whether or not you enjoyed this journey and why.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– How do people in your country feel about driverless vehicles?
– Do you think that driverless vehicles could lead to a reduction in car ownership?
– Would that have a positive or a negative effect on people?
– What are the advantages of driverless vehicles?
– How do you think driverless vehicles can improve road safety?
– In what ways can driverless cars reduce traffic congestion in urban areas?
– Are there disadvantages to driverless vehicles?

Answer

I’d like to talk about a crowded place that I visited recently, which was the downtown market in my city. This bustling marketplace is located right in the heart of the city, near the central square. I went there last Saturday with a couple of my close friends.

We planned a day out to explore the market, shop for some unique items, and enjoy the local food stalls.
It was a sunny afternoon when we decided to venture into this lively market. As we entered, the atmosphere was electrifying.

People were hustling and bustling all around – vendors shouting out their offers, shoppers bargaining for deals, and the aroma of various street foods wafting through the air. The market was a riot of colours, with stalls selling everything from clothing and accessories to exotic spices.

Navigating through the crowd was quite an adventure. We weaved our way through the busy alleys, exploring different stalls. It was both exciting and overwhelming. There was this constant buzz of activity, and you could feel the energy in the air. Despite the chaos, there was a sense of community among the visitors, as everyone seemed to be enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Personally, I felt a mix of exhilaration and a bit of claustrophobia due to the crowd. On one hand, I loved the liveliness and the variety the market had to offer. Interacting with the vendors and fellow shoppers added to the experience. On the other hand, the sheer number of people made it a bit challenging to move freely. It was definitely an adventure, but I wouldn’t want to be in such a crowded place for too long.

In the end, despite the crowd, I appreciated the unique charm of the downtown market. It was an enjoyable day out with my friends, and I left with some interesting purchases and fond memories, making the bustling experience worthwhile.

IELTS Speaking test in India – October 2023

The following Speaking test questions were shared by our kind subscriber PS who recently took IELTS in India.

Preparation Tip: Do a practice session where you answer all of these questions and record yourself. If you don’t have enough ideas for questions on a particular topic, research it and write down some vocabulary words and how to use them in a sentence.

After recording your answers, listen to them and look for fluency (frequent pausing, self-correction, hesitation) or pronunciation problems. Then re-record the questions you’re not happy with, and this time try to sound more fluent and pronounce the words better. Take a Speaking Mock Test online, read your Examiner’s feedback and learn how to score higher.
