IELTS Writing Task 1 Bar Chart of percentage of people who ate at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day

Band 8.5 Model Answer

The bar chart provides information on the percentage of men, women, and children that ate at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day from 2001 to 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that across the entire period women were the most likely group to have the necessary amount of fruit and vegetables in their diet, and children – the least. Still, by the end of the period the popularity of fruit and vegetables increased among all the participants in the survey.

A closer look at the chart reveals that women had the highest percentage overall, starting at 21% in 2001 and reaching a high of 35% in 2006 after a steady rise in the previous years. By 2008, the figure had declined slightly to 30%.

The ratio of men who had 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day was lower than that of women throughout the period. It remained steady at 17% for the first three years, from 2001 to 2003, but then rose to 27% by 2006 and declined slightly to 26% by 2008.

Children, whose figures were below those of men and women, started relatively low at 12% in 2001. The figure remained the same until 2003, and thereafter there was a noticeable increase to 17% in 2004. From then on, the figures continued to rise until they reached a high of 26% in 2007 before falling back slightly to 24% in 2008.

Dorottya prepared by herself and passed IELTS with a Band 8 – COPY her method

IELTS High Scorer's Advice Band 8 Tips September 2023

Meet Dorottya, an ambitious learner from Budapest whose native language is Hungarian. She set her sights on a remarkable goal: achieving a Band 8 score in the IELTS exam. You might be wondering, how did she do it? Well, her journey is a testament to grit, resourcefulness, and a dash of inspiration for anyone looking to conquer the IELTS challenge. Let’s dive into her story!

Background

We met Dorottya when she joined the VIP Club in July, to get some help with her IELTS preparation. She was preparing on her own – but she had an ambitious goal, so she needed support and preparation materials to get her over the finish line.

Preparation Strategies

About 10 days into her preparation, Dorottya bought the self-study book ‘Target Band 7 – How to Maximize your score’ and really put it to test. She was definitely not one of those people who think that by simply buying IELTS materials they will somehow magically pass the test – she was actually using every single resource she got. Learning strategies from the book, applying them in practice, solving practice tests, analysing her answers, and improving day by day – this is what her self-study days looked like.

Dorottya was also using her VIP Club content daily. Instead of taking a passive approach and simply reading the model answers for Speaking and Writing that we sent her daily, she did something different. She took an active approach, and it paid off big time! She kept a notebook handy and copied all the new words she came across in our model answers. She wrote the words’ meanings next to them and then used these new words when she practiced in writing and speaking. The result? Band 7.5 in Writing and Band 8 in Speaking.

Active learning approach helped Dorottya expand her active vocabulary by adding new, higher-level words to it. Writing the words and their meanings in a notebook helped her remember them, and using them in her writing and speaking practice ensured they remained in her active vocabulary.

Active vocabulary consists of the words that you use frequently and confidently, whereas passive vocabulary consists of words whose meanings you know, but don’t really use in your speaking and writing. This makes active vocabulary very important in IELTS.

Dorottya didn’t relax until IELTS was behind her, she kept using her VIP subscription up until the very last day before the test. When it was time to take her exam, she went in a hopeful candidate and came out a champion!

Results

Her total investment in IELTS prep was just $51, including the VIP Club membership and all self-prep materials. That’s it!

She passed the test on her first attempt and got a Band 8 overall, with Listening 8.5, Reading 7.5, Writing 7.5 and Speaking 8.0.

Dorottya’s Testimonial

Reflecting on her preparation experience with us, Dorottya said:

I got a lot of help from IELTS-Blog.com. I read a couple of band 8/9 example essays every day and also checked writing task 1 examples. I used a copy book to write the new words and their meaning in it. Even 5-10 words a day or every second day adds up. Then I did a lot of reading practice and used ‘Target Band 7’ book and it strategies. I am very thankful for all your help, I got a band 8!

Congratulations on your amazing Band 8, Dorottya!

IELTS Speaking questions with model answers: Studies, T-shirts, Companies, Being Late & Time Management

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

In today’s post we are covering IELTS Speaking questions and answers on the topics of Studies, T-shirts, Companies, Being Late & Time Management. The questions were shared by a student who took IELTS in Iran. The answers below show a good way to respond to these questions.

NEW! In this podcast episode you can watch the video and LISTEN to all the questions and answers. It’s great to improve your pronunciation, intonation and overall fluency!

Watch and listen in the video, or read the model answers below:

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview) Questions & Answers

1. Do you study or work?

I’m currently studying computer science at university. It’s a fascinating field that is all about understanding how computers work, designing algorithms, and developing software. It covers a wide range of topics such as programming languages, data structures, artificial intelligence, and computer networks.

2. Why did you choose to study this particular subject?

This wasn’t a random decision. It was a result of careful consideration and introspection. From a young age, I had a keen interest in technology and its impact on society. I was always fascinated by the possibilities that computers and software could bring. Moreover, as I grew older, I recognised the abundance of career opportunities and the high demand for skilled professionals in this domain.

3. Do you like wearing T-shirts?

Yes, I definitely enjoy wearing T-shirts! They are versatile, comfortable, and suitable for various occasions. T-shirts designs are literally endless, and their colours and patterns allow me to express my personal style. Whether I’m going for a casual outing with friends or attending a relaxed event, a well-fitting T-shirt is always a reliable and fashionable choice.

4. How often do you wear them?

I wear T-shirts quite often, especially during my leisure time or when the weather is warm. They’ve become an integral part of my wardrobe. On a typical day, when I’m attending university classes or doing activities that don’t require formal attire, you will usually find me wearing a comfortable T-shirt. It’s my go-to option that offers both comfort and style.

5. Do you prefer buying things from big companies or small businesses?

I believe that supporting both big companies and small businesses is important, as they each have their own advantages. Big companies often offer a wide range of products and services, and they provide competitive prices. On the other hand, small businesses contribute to local economies and provide unique and personalised experiences. They often have a strong connection with their customers and offer specialised products or services that may not be available from larger corporations.

6. Have you ever worked in a small business before?

Yes, I’ve had the valuable experience of working in a small business during my summer break. I joined a local boutique that specialised in handmade accessories. It was an incredible opportunity to witness firsthand the dedication and passion that goes into running a small business. I worked closely with the owner and was involved in various aspects of the business.

7. Have you ever thought about starting your own business?

The idea has always intrigued me. I believe that entrepreneurship offers a unique avenue to pursue your passions and create something of value. Although I’m currently focused on my studies, I often find myself brainstorming ideas and envisioning potential ventures that align with my interests and skills.

Part 2 (Cue Card) Question & Answer

Describe a time when you were late. You should say

– when it was
– what you were late for
– why you were late

and explain how you felt about it.

Answer

I generally try to be punctual but sometimes it happens that I am late to appointments. The time I vividly remember happened last year, when I had an important job interview scheduled for 10:00 AM. I had been preparing for this interview for weeks and was determined to make a good impression. However, on that day, everything seemed to go wrong.

I woke up feeling a bit under the weather, which made it challenging for me to get ready quickly. To make things worse there was unexpected traffic on my way to the interview location. It was frustrating to see the minutes ticking away while I was stuck in a long line of cars.

Despite my best efforts, I ended up arriving nearly 15 minutes late. I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me as I hurriedly entered the building. Once I finally found the interview room, I sincerely apologised for my tardiness and explained the reasons for it. Fortunately, the interviewers were understanding and empathetic. Despite my late arrival, the interview proceeded, and I was able to showcase my skills and qualifications.

Reflecting on the experience, I felt a mixture of regret and relief. I regretted not being more proactive and not anticipating the potential obstacles that could have caused delays. I was really beating myself up for not leaving home earlier or checking traffic conditions! However, I was relieved that the interviewers were so understanding and still allowed me the opportunity to present myself.

Part 3 (Discussion) Questions & Answers

1. Are you good at managing your time?

I would say that I’ve developed decent time management skills over the years, but it’s definitely an ongoing process. Like most people, I sometimes do find myself facing time constraints and struggling to prioritise tasks effectively. However, I make a conscious effort to plan ahead to ensure that I stay on track and meet deadlines.

2. Do people in your country think that being on time is important?

Yes, it’s generally considered important in my country. Punctuality is valued and seen as a sign of respect. Whether it’s attending social gatherings, or even everyday appointments, people here tend to place emphasis on arriving on time.

3. How can people manage their time, especially when dealing with multiple tasks or responsibilities?

I think that prioritising your goals and focusing on the most crucial activities first is important. Also, I find that creating a schedule or a to-do list helps me to break down my activities into smaller manageable tasks.

4. How can poor time management skills affect someone’s personal and professional life?

Well, in personal life this can lead to increased stress levels, and strained relationships, because poor time management can leave you feeling constantly overwhelmed. Rushing to complete tasks can affect people’s mental well-being and overall quality of life. Professionally, poor time management can reduce productivity, and hinder career growth. When deadlines are consistently missed or work is incomplete, it reflects poorly on one’s professionalism and reliability.

5. Do you think time management is a skill that can be learned and improved? Why or why not?

It’s definitely a skill that can be learned and improved with practice, self-awareness, and by adopting effective strategies. By consciously implementing time management techniques, people can gradually develop better control over their time and master a skill that will serve them for life.

6. Can technology help with time management? In what way?

Yes, I do believe that technology can play a significant role in assisting with time management. In today’s digital age, there are numerous tools and apps available that can help us stay organised, track our tasks, and optimise our time.

IELTS essay, topic: Social media helps people to keep in touch with friends and stay on top of news and events (advantages/disadvantages)

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 August 2023

This essay topic was seen in a recent IELTS test in Canada.

Social media helps people to keep in touch with friends and stay on top of news and events. Do you think the advantages of social media outweigh the disadvantages?

Sample Band 8 Essay

Since its inception, social media has revolutionised the way people connect and access information. It has become a prevalent tool for keeping in touch with friends and staying updated on news and events. While there are clear advantages to social media in terms of connectivity and information dissemination, it is crucial to critically examine whether these benefits outweigh the potential disadvantages.

On the one hand, social media offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it serves as a powerful platform for individuals to maintain and strengthen relationships with friends. Through features such as messaging, video calls, and photo sharing, people can connect with their loved ones, regardless of geographical barriers. This enhances interpersonal connections and fosters a sense of belonging, especially in a fast-paced and globalised world. Additionally, social media plays a pivotal role in keeping users updated on news and events. It provides a real-time stream of information, allowing individuals to stay informed about local and global affairs.

Despite these advantages, it is crucial to consider the potential drawbacks of social media. One significant concern is the impact on mental well-being. Extensive use of social media has been linked to increased levels of anxiety, depression, and feelings of social isolation. The constant exposure to carefully curated highlights and reels of others’ lives can lead to self-comparison and feeling of inadequacy. Privacy and security concerns are another set of drawbacks associated with social media. Users often share personal information and details of their lives, making them susceptible to privacy breaches and identity theft.

In conclusion, while social media undeniably provides valuable means for keeping in touch with friends and staying informed about news and events, it is also crucial to acknowledge the potential disadvantages associated with its usage. Personally, I appreciate the benefits social media has to offer and believe that its drawbacks can be mitigated by fostering responsible usage practices and advocating for platform improvements, so that individuals and society can harness the benefits of social media while minimising its negative impacts.
