Speaking test

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe an interesting conversation you had with a stranger. You should say

– who the stranger is
– when and where you met
– and explain what you talked about.

Answer

Let’s see… I recently had an interesting conversation with a stranger I met while out shopping one day. He was an older gentleman, probably in his mid-seventies, wearing a blue plaid shirt and brown slacks. We met at the store’s checkout. He came for some gardening supplies, and I was getting some groceries for dinner.

While waiting in the line, we started talking about the weather, and how it had been unusually warm for this time of year. Then we discussed our hobbies. He was an avid gardener and loved tending to his flowerbeds, and I told him that I prefer to read books or watch documentaries on TV in my free time.

He then asked me what I did for work, so we talked about my job as a teacher at the local elementary school. He shared that he used to be a principal before he retired, and mentioned how much he enjoyed seeing all of his students learn and grow over the years. We talked about the challenges schools were currently facing with budget cuts, reduced staffing levels, and inadequate resources for students.

Eventually, our conversation shifted back towards our hobbies and interests. It turns out that he also liked reading books, but preferred biographies of famous people over fiction stories. We swapped recommendations of authors we liked, which then led to an interesting debate about the best historical novels.

We finally said goodbye after twenty minutes or so, but it felt much longer, because it had been such an engaging conversation!

Or you can listen on YouTube (turn subtitles on):

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

1. Where are you from?

I’m originally from South Africa. I was born and raised there, and it’s where my family still lives today. South Africa has a rich history and culture, as well as plenty of natural beauty to enjoy. It’s a great place to call home.

2. Is your area a safe place to live for all ages?

Yes, I believe that my area is very safe to live in for all age groups. It has very low crime rates compared to other areas in the country, and everyone feels comfortable walking around, day or night.

3. Now I’d like to talk about chocolate. Do you like chocolate?

Absolutely! Chocolate has always been one of my favourite treats since I was a kid. There are so many different kinds! There is milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, it’s hard not to find something you like! On cold winter nights when I want something comforting and delicious, I especially love indulging in some hot cocoa with marshmallows.

4. Why do you think chocolate is a popular treat worldwide?

Well, it seems to me that the main reason why chocolate is so popular around the world is because of its strong association with pleasure and comfort-eating. Chocolate has an irresistible appeal, it makes us feel better, even if we’re feeling down!

5. Do you think chocolate makes a nice gift?

Oh, definitely! Not only does it look and taste great, but also provides an opportunity for us to express our feelings through thoughtful gestures. We might include a greeting card with a personal message or choose a chocolate shaped in a certain way for a special occasion. For example, for Valentine’s Day we might give someone a box of heart-shaped chocolates, to show how much we care about them.

6. Do you know anyone who doesn’t like chocolate?

Surprisingly, yes, although they are few and far between! My best friend growing up, actually, didn’t like the taste of chocolate at all because of its bitter flavour. Instead, he preferred fruity desserts like pies or cakes, filled with fruit jams or jellies.

IELTS Speaking Test, Part 3 questions with model answers (Technology)

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here are some high-scoring Part 3 model answers for the Speaking Test that was shared by a student from India. The answers below show a good way to respond to these questions. You can find the answers in the other parts here: Part 1, Part 2.

NEW! In this podcast episode you can LISTEN to all the questions and answers. It’s great to improve your pronunciation, intonation and overall fluency!

Or you can listen on YouTube (turn subtitles on):

Speaking test

Part 3 (Discussion)

We’ve been talking about technology, and now, in the third part of the test, I would like to ask you a few more questions related to this.

1. What technology products or technologies do people use now?

Well, I think people these days use a wide range of products in their daily lives, from smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart TVs to wearable devices such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, and augmented reality glasses. Other popular technologies are voice-activated virtual assistants like Alexa and Google Home, and they can control everything, from our thermostats, to the locks on our front doors.

2. Why do you think large companies often release new products?

The main reason is in order to stay ahead of the competition and capitalise on emerging trends in consumer behavior. Launching new products that appeal to the latest consumer taste or preferences can capture a larger market share than their competitors.

3. Do you think people spend too much on technology these days?

Yes, I think that people now rely heavily on their smartphones, laptops, tablets and other devices as essential tools for communication, entertainment, education and even work. Because of that, there is now this increased temptation to upgrade existing products in order to remain productive and have access to the newest features that can help make tasks easier or faster. People also want to stay ahead of everyone in their social circles; nothing illustrates this better than having the latest smart gadget in the market.

4. Do you feel that we rely on technology and devices too heavily?

I think we do. We rely on technology and devices too heavily, because of the convenience and efficiency they provide. The problem this creates is our decreased attention spans and more distraction during work or study. So, on the one hand, technology saves us time and labour, but on the other hand we make more mistakes and take longer to complete tasks. Some people also find themselves at the risk of addiction to screens and watching meaningless content which wastes their time.

5. How did technology change the society we live in now?

Technology has transformed many aspects of modern life, from how we work and communicate, to how we shop. It is helping us access information instantly via search engines, and hold virtual meetings via video conferencing tools. We buy things online from retailers offering same-day delivery services, without even realising their websites are powered by algorithms which predict our wants and needs!

Speaking test

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a piece of technology that you find difficult to use. You should say

– when you got it
– what you got it for
– how often you use it
– and explain why you find it difficult to use.

Answer

Alright, so, I got a new fitness tracker about three months ago to monitor my progress in becoming more physically active and staying on top of my health. I had heard great things about this particular device, so I was excited to give it a try when I purchased it. This is why I was really disappointed when I found it surprisingly difficult to use.

To begin with, setting up the device was more complex than I expected; there were multiple steps involved, and it took me longer than I expected to get everything configured correctly. The device comes packed with features that are intended to make tracking your progress easier and more effective, but ironically, navigating between them is too overwhelming and confusing at times. What’s more, the app that comes with the device is incredibly user-unfriendly; for example, finding my way around the various menus is overly complicated and time-consuming.

I still try to use this fitness tracker every day – usually, first thing in the morning when I wake up – to help me get fit. But every time I make a mistake or forget how to switch a certain feature on or off, it becomes a hassle to figure out how to undo whatever I just did. On top of that, it sometimes refuses to connect to my device, and I usually only realise it at the end of the day, that I’ve lost all the data for the day!

IELTS Speaking Test, Part 1 questions with model answers (Work + Libraries)

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here are some high-scoring Part 1 model answers for the Speaking Test that was shared by a student from India. The answers show a good way to respond to these questions.

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

1. What kind of work do you do?

I am a Software Engineer at my company. In this role, I develop and maintain software applications that enable our customers to access our products and services.

2. Why do you like working for your company?

Working at my company is an incredibly rewarding experience due to the people-oriented environment we foster at the office. My colleagues and I hold each other accountable to deliver great results. Our leadership team is always available for questions or feedback, allowing everyone to feel supported even when things get tough.

3. Is your company good to its employees?

Absolutely! My employer continuously goes above and beyond to ensure all the employees are taken care of professionally and personally. Our compensation is fair and we work reasonable hours. We also have good healthcare benefits and a generous amount of vacation days.

4. Let’s talk about libraries. Do you use libraries often?

Yes, I use libraries quite often. They are a great source of knowledge, especially when I’m researching for an assignment or project. Libraries are also great places to relax and explore different topics without any pressure or expectations from others. On top of that, it’s a great way to get away from the distractions of home, such as TV, the Internet, and video games.

5. Are people in your country used to libraries?

Yes, in my country libraries have been around for as long as I can remember and are part of our cultural heritage. People refer to them fondly as ‘public palaces’ because they provide free access to knowledge no matter one’s background or financial situation.

6. Are children in your country using libraries a lot?

No, I don’t think so. This is mostly because of the ever-increasing digital technology always at their fingertips. Many children now use their phones or tablets to access to a whole world of information and entertainment, from movies on Netflix to music streaming services and virtual games. These devices offer ease of access and a wide variety of content that libraries can sometimes struggle to keep up with.

7. Do you think being a librarian is a tough job?

I guess it is, because it requires so much dedication. Librarians must always stay up-to-date on current trends regarding information technology. At the same time they need to make sure all patrons feel comfortable using their facilities, no matter their age group or intellectual level. It must take a lot of patience to help someone learn how to use the library’s resources, especially the digital ones, and they also have to provide quick service when asked to find something specific in the stacks!

IELTS essay, topic: Some argue that governments should create nutrition and food choice laws to improve public health (discuss + opinion)

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 February 2023

This essay topic was seen in a recent IELTS test in Japan

Public health is becoming an urgent issue nowadays. Some argue that governments should create nutrition and food choice laws to improve public health, while others believe that it is a matter of personal choice and responsibility. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Band 8 Essay

Public health has become an increasingly pressing issue in the modern world, with many populations facing rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases. This has led to a debate as to whether governments should establish nutrition and food choice laws for the betterment of public health or if it solely falls on individuals to make wise choices. In my view, everyone should take ownership of their diet and assume responsibility for their health because it is the right choice.

The argument for government-imposed nutrition and food choice laws is that they could help prevent people from making unhealthy choices which could lead to more serious illnesses down the line. For example, government regulations could limit the amount of sugar or fats allowed in food products, especially those marketed to children, and impose taxes on unhealthy snacks like chips and candy bars. This approach would also benefit those who lack the knowledge about healthy food, necessary to make informed decisions. By providing clear guidelines on what foods are healthy, and by taxing the unhealthy options higher, the government would steer individuals away from unhealthy options.

However, there are also some valid arguments against governmental intervention. These types of regulations infringe upon individuals’ right to choose what they put in their bodies. After all, everyone should be free to make lifestyle choices for themselves. Additionally, there may not be enough evidence to suggest that overly restrictive regulations would have beneficial effects on public health outcomes in the long run. Since people’s love of unhealthy food is often considered an addiction, it is unlikely that a higher price or other warnings would be enough to deter individuals from purchasing unhealthy food items.

In conclusion, while there can certainly be benefits associated with implementing nutrition and food choice laws at a governmental level, ultimately it should still come down to personal choice and responsibility as far as one’s diet is concerned. Governments should instead focus on providing citizens with better nutrition education, so that they can make better informed decisions about what they consume. This way, they can receive the information they need while still having autonomy over their own diets and lifestyles.

Teacher’s comment: The writer presented ideas and examples that are relevant and directly related to the topic. All parts of the question have been addressed and the arguments – sufficiently supported. The ideas have been presented in a logical way, with the writer’s opinion in the introduction paragraph, followed by the discussion of the two views and a conclusion. The paragraphs have been used correctly, each containing a well-developed idea. This essay has plenty of uncommon lexical items (terms related to this particular topic) which have been used appropriately and spelled correctly. There is a variety of complex sentence structures, the writer has good control of punctuation, and the majority of their sentences are error-free. This essay is likely to get Band 8 – 8.5 in IELTS.

IELTS One Skill Retake: why you should consider it

IELTS One Skill Retake

For some test takers this is a very familiar situation: you’ve taken the IELTS exam, the results are out, everything is what you hoped for… except for that one pesky little score, that’s just half a band lower than you need. Argh… now what?!

If that’s your experience and you’re in Australia, IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR for short) has just become a solution to that problem.

All you need to do is log into your IELTS profile, view your results, choose the skill you wish to retake and book your new test date.

If you’re not in Australia and IELTS One Skill Retake isn’t yet available in your country, this information is still useful, so read on. IELTS has just started the roll-out of this new option, using Australia as their testing ground. When IELTS One Skill Retake comes to your country, it will likely work the same as in Australia, so it’s worth knowing how it can help you and what it can do for you, for when you get access to it.

Where is IELTS One Skill Retake available now?

IELTS One Skill Retake is now available at IDP Melbourne, IDP Sydney, IDP Brisbane, IDP Adelaide, IDP Perth and IDP Cairns. The roll-out is in full swing and soon the option will be offered in many other test centres across Australia.

What will my IELTS One Skill Retake result look like?

After completing the IELTS One Skill Retake you will receive an IELTS certificate that will include the 3 unchanged scores from your previous full test and your new score from the One Skill Retake test. The date on the Test Report Form (TRF for short) will be the original date of your full test.

Important! Your previous TRF remains valid, and in case your score in the One Skill Retake is lower than the original one in your full test, you can still use the original TRF if it helps.

Is IELTS One Skill Retake acceptable for immigration and further study?

For immigration purposes some visa subclasses accept the IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) and some don’t, so make sure to check the list of visa subclasses where OSR is allowed here.

For further study there are no known issues, because you will receive a new IELTS certificate including the unchanged scores from your previous test and your new score from the skill you took again.

What are the limitations of IELTS One Skill Retake?

1. You must have taken the IELTS test on computer, at a test centre that offers One Skill Retake.

At present IELTS One Skill Retake is only available to people who took their full IELTS test on computer and it’s not available to people who took the paper-based test. So if you are planning to go for IELTS One Skill Retake in case your score is lower than you need, book your full test on computer AND make sure your test centre offers IELTS One Skill Retake, to be eligible to retake just one skill later.

2. You need to apply for IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of your original, full test.

This shouldn’t generally be a problem, because for computer-delivered tests the results are available 3-5 days after your test, which leaves plenty of time for you to book your IELTS One Skill Retake.

3. You can only retake one skill for each full IELTS test that you’ve sat.

So, for example, if you took the IELTS test and you’re unhappy with your scores in Writing and Speaking, you can retake either the Writing or the Speaking as a single skill, but not both. If you need to change scores in 2 skills, the only way is to take the test again.

What if I have 2 skills where I need to raise my score?

Theoretically, you could apply for EOR (Enquiry On Results, also known as remarking) first, for both of the problematic skills, and see if one of your scores goes up as a result of that, then apply for IELTS One Skill Retake for the other score. According to IELTS.org, EOR takes anywhere between 2 and 21 days, and if you do receive the result of your EOR application within that time frame, that gives you up to 5 weeks to book your One Skill Retake. While in theory this might work, in reality, if there are delays with your EOR, you may run out of time to apply for your One Skill Retake.

Do you have questions about IELTS One Skill Retake? You can ask them in comments.

IELTS essay, topic: There is a moral necessity for the richer countries to help the poorer countries (agree/disagree)

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 9, 2023

This is a model response to a Writing Task 2 topic from High Scorer’s Choice IELTS Practice Tests book series (reprinted with permission). This answer is close to IELTS Band 9.

Set 2 Academic book, Practice Test 9

Writing Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

There is a moral necessity today for the richer countries of the world to help the poorer countries develop in terms of feeding the population, education and health care. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 9 Essay

The world today is often divided into two categories, more developed and less developed countries. This division is significant in terms of health, wealth and education. To minimise this gap, it is argued that richer countries are morally responsible to support the less wealthy. I, personally, feel that the prosperous countries are obligated and expected to to contribute to the development of countries with weaker economies.

To address this argument, the history of the wealthy countries is relevant. Many less developed countries are former colonies, therefore the wealthy countries had a historical impact on the less wealthy. Thus, richer countries’ economies were dependent on the currently less developed countries for their rich status. Furthermore, even today the wealthy countries contribute to the wealth inequality by exploiting the inhabitants of less developed countries, giving workers lower wages than people within their own countries. Due to this dependence on poorer countries and the influence that the richer countries have had on the imbalance, it can be concluded that richer countries are indeed morally obliged to help the less wealthy countries.

Opposing this is the view that each country is in charge of their own inhabitants and that therefore they need to provide health, education and basic necessities for themselves. In addition, simply providing these three services would not lead to closing the wealth gap. It would rather be helpful to invest sustainably in poorer countries and help them create their own systems, allowing these countries to be self-sufficient.

In conclusion, while there is a moral necessity for wealthy countries to aid the poorer ones, simply providing basic necessities is not sufficient. A more sustainable idea would be to teach countries to plan and provide for themselves by giving economic incentives.
