IELTS Speaking Test, Part 2 question with model answer: Describe a bad service you received in a restaurant

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here is a Band 9 Speaking Part 2 answer for the cue card “Describe a bad service you received in a restaurant”. This cue card has been seen recently in an IELTS exam in Australia. The answer below shows a good way to respond to this question.

Watch and listen in the video, or read the model answer below:

Speaking test

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a bad service you received in a restaurant. You should say

– when and where it happened
– what happened
– how you felt about the service

and explain how the experience could have been improved.

Answer

Oh, do I have a story for you! Picture this. It was pouring rain on Friday afternoon, and I thought, why not treat myself to lunch at this supposedly amazing restaurant downtown? So, there I was, super excited for a great meal.

But, oh boy, right from the start, things felt off. The waiter barely noticed me and seemed like he’d rather be anywhere else. I asked about the menu, and he mumbled something I could barely understand. I figured maybe he was just having a rough day.

Then it got worse. My food took forever to arrive, and when it did, it had a weird taste. I tried to get the waiter’s attention, but he was nowhere to be found. Drinks were forgotten, orders were messed up – it was like a comedy sketch gone wrong.

Now, I’m a patient person, but this was too much. I felt annoyed and confused at the same time. Was this place always like this, or was it just my luck?

But here’s the kicker – just as I was about to storm out, the chef, who overheard my complaints, came to my table. He was genuinely sorry and explained they were short-staffed. To make up for it, he gave me a free dessert and promised a discount next time.

I was shocked, to say the least. His sincerity turned my whole experience around. This outing was anything but ordinary, starting with frustration and ending with a surprising dose of hospitality.

IELTS Speaking Test, Part 2 question with model answer: Describe an invention that changed people’s lives

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here is a Band 9 Speaking Part 2 answer for the cue card “Describe an invention that changed people’s lives”. This cue card has been seen recently in an IELTS exam in Canada. The answer below shows a good way to respond to this question.

Watch and listen in the video, or read the model answer below:

Speaking test

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe an invention that changed people’s lives. You should say

– what it is
– when it was invented
– how it changed people’s lives

and explain why you think it was important.

Answer

You won’t believe how this one invention has turned the driving world upside down – the electric car! Imagine cruising down the street without the growl of a gasoline engine, but the whisper-quiet hum of an electric motor. It’s like stepping into the future.

I first got intrigued when my neighbor, Sarah, got herself a sleek electric car a few years back. The first time she took me for a spin, I was floored. It was so smooth, so quiet, it felt like we were gliding on air. She explained how she charged it at home every night, and with a full charge, she could easily zoom around the city for days. It was a game-changer for her – no more gas stations, no more exhaust fumes.

But it’s not just Sarah; electric cars are popping up all over the place. In fact, I read about a city in Norway, Oslo, where electric cars are so popular that they’ve started banning fossil fuel cars from certain areas to curb pollution. It’s incredible to think how a single invention is reshaping entire urban landscapes.

And let’s talk about the environment. Electric cars are like the superheroes of the automotive world. By ditching gasoline, they’re significantly reducing our carbon footprint. I mean, we’re talking about tons of CO2 emissions saved every year. It’s a relief to know that every time someone drives an electric car, they’re contributing to cleaner air and a healthier planet.

Charging stations are also becoming as common as coffee shops. I recently took a road trip with my buddy, and we didn’t have to worry about finding a gas station. Instead, we found these charging spots at rest areas and even fancy hotels. It’s like the world is gearing up for an electric future, one charging station at a time.

What really strikes me is that it’s not just a trend; it’s a movement. More car companies are investing in electric models, making them affordable and accessible to everyday folks like us. It’s not just about driving; it’s about driving change.

IELTS essay, topic: New parents should attend parenting classes to learn how to bring up their children well (agree/disagree)

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 October 2023

This essay topic was seen in recent IELTS test in the UK.

New parents should attend parenting classes to learn how to bring up their children well. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

There is no doubt that raising a child is one of the most challenging yet rewarding responsibilities for any person. The idea that new parents should attend parenting classes to ensure their child’s proper upbringing has always generated mixed reactions. I agree for the most part with this notion, as such education will provide parents with much needed foundational knowledge to navigate parenthood.

Parenting classes can equip young families with essential tools and information that they might not possess, and this is especially helpful for the parents who might not have a strong support network. In addition, first time parents can gain a greater sense of confidence when making important decisions about their baby. This is mainly because being equipped with knowledge and insight into the different aspects of parenting can help to ease a person’s anxiety and doubts about the best way to move forward. When it comes to things like choosing the best forms of nutrition for your baby or trying to manage their sleep schedules, this is especially useful. Inexperienced parents need information about what to look out for when your child is ill and how to manage emergency situations. In my opinion, these are things that every parent should know, but, unfortunately, not every parent does.

However, it is also worth noting that while basic information offered in parenting classes might apply in most situations, not every child responds in the same way. What works for one family might not work for another. Therefore, relying solely on class information without taking into consideration a child’s unique needs and personality might not always yield positive results.

In conclusion, I see parenting classes as a valuable tool that offers crucial knowledge at the very beginning. However, as every parent has their own journey with their unique bundle of joy, he or she should develop and trust their instincts about their child’s needs.

Teacher’s feedback:

This essay has all the prerequisites of Band 8 level writing.

Task Response: Band 8
The essay effectively addresses the task by presenting a clear opinion on the necessity of parenting classes for new parents. The writer provides valid reasons supporting their opinion, discussing both the benefits of parenting classes and the limitations. The essay also maintains a clear focus on the topic throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8
The essay is well-structured, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs that present arguments coherently, and a concise conclusion. Ideas are logically organized, and there is a smooth flow of information between sentences and paragraphs. The use of linking words (“in addition, however, therefore, in conclusion”) is effective in guiding the reader through the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 8
The essay demonstrates a good range of vocabulary, including terms related to parenting, such as “nutrition,” “sleep schedules,” and “emergency situations.” The writer effectively uses language to convey ideas and arguments clearly. The expression of opinions is articulate and varied, enhancing the overall quality of the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8
Strong command of grammar is evident in this work. Complex sentence structures are used accurately, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede understanding. The sentences are varied, indicating a good command of grammar and a high level of language proficiency.

Submit your essay for correction and find out how to improve your Writing score.

IELTS Speaking Test, Part 2 question with model answer: Describe an area of science you’re interested in

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here is a Band 9 Speaking Part 2 answer for the cue card “Describe an area of science you’re interested in”. This cue card has been seen recently in many test centres around the world. The answer below shows a good way to respond to this question.

Watch and listen in the video, or read the model answer below:

Speaking test

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe an area of science you’re interested in. You should say

– when you first heard about it
– where it happened
– how you heard about it

and explain why you are interested in this area of science.

Answer

You know, genetics has always been this captivating puzzle for me. I can trace this interest back to high school, in Ms. Johnson’s biology class. She had this knack for taking these mind-boggling concepts and turning them into fascinating tales. So, there I was, sitting in class one day, and she starts unraveling the mystery of DNA – you know, that tiny code that’s like the instruction manual for life.

Can you imagine? In those microscopic strands, all the things that make us who we are – from the way we smile to why some of us can taste bitterness more intensely. It’s like we’re all characters in this incredible genetic novel, each chapter telling a different story about our ancestry.

But what really got me hooked was the idea of inheritance. You look at your parents, your grandparents, and suddenly, everything clicks. I realised that my love for music and Dad’s knack for fixing things – it’s all written in our genes. It’s like we inherit this unique family legacy, not just in traits but in the quirks and talents that make us special.

The real magic happens when you think about how this knowledge is shaping our world. Personalised medicine, for instance – it’s mind-blowing. Doctors can tailor treatments based on our genetic makeup, ensuring they’re not just effective but also safer for us. And agriculture? Genetically modified crops are revolutionising the way we grow food, making it more resilient and accessible to millions.

Every time I dive into this genetic world, I feel like I’m on this incredible adventure. It’s not just about science; it’s about understanding ourselves and our place in the grand scheme of things. It’s like peering into the code of life itself. The more I learn, the more I’m convinced that genetics isn’t just a subject – it’s a journey into the very essence of what makes us human.

IELTS Speaking Test, Part 2 question with model answer: Describe a crowded place you have visited

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here is a Band 9 Speaking Part 2 answer for the cue card “Describe a crowded place you have visited”. This cue card has been seen recently in many test centres around the world. The answer below shows a good way to respond to this question.

Watch and listen in the video, or read the model answer below:

Speaking test

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a crowded place you have visited. You should say

– where the place is
– when you went there
– with whom you went there

and explain how you felt about this crowded place.

Answer

I’d like to talk about a crowded place that I visited recently, which was the downtown market in my city. This bustling marketplace is located right in the heart of the city, near the central square. I went there last Saturday with a couple of my close friends.

We planned a day out to explore the market, shop for some unique items, and enjoy the local food stalls.
It was a sunny afternoon when we decided to venture into this lively market. As we entered, the atmosphere was electrifying.

People were hustling and bustling all around – vendors shouting out their offers, shoppers bargaining for deals, and the aroma of various street foods wafting through the air. The market was a riot of colours, with stalls selling everything from clothing and accessories to exotic spices.

Navigating through the crowd was quite an adventure. We weaved our way through the busy alleys, exploring different stalls. It was both exciting and overwhelming. There was this constant buzz of activity, and you could feel the energy in the air. Despite the chaos, there was a sense of community among the visitors, as everyone seemed to be enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Personally, I felt a mix of exhilaration and a bit of claustrophobia due to the crowd. On one hand, I loved the liveliness and the variety the market had to offer. Interacting with the vendors and fellow shoppers added to the experience. On the other hand, the sheer number of people made it a bit challenging to move freely. It was definitely an adventure, but I wouldn’t want to be in such a crowded place for too long.

In the end, despite the crowd, I appreciated the unique charm of the downtown market. It was an enjoyable day out with my friends, and I left with some interesting purchases and fond memories, making the bustling experience worthwhile.

IELTS essay, topic: Some people believe that countries should produce all the food necessary to feed their populations and import as little food as possible (agree/disagree)

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 October 2023

This essay topic was seen in recent IELTS test in India.

Some people believe that countries should produce all the food necessary to feed their populations and import as little food as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years the topic of food sovereignty has become a pressing issue for many nations. It is a commonly held belief that that countries should prioritise being self-sufficient by producing all the food necessary for their citizens instead of importing it. Although this viewpoint has its merits, I believe that this is not a feasible or beneficial option.

To begin, utilising local food production will enhance a country’s national security, as this will prevent international disputes that may occur over pricing and other financial issues related to importing goods, such as taxes and other costs. In addition, local food production will promote sustainable agricultural practices according to a country’s regional climates, which will preserve local biodiversity.

However, it must be noted that this method might not be beneficial for all nations, as not every country possesses arable land or a climate that is conducive to cultivating a variety of produce. For example, countries in colder parts of the world would not have access to tropical fruits like mangoes or bananas. Therefore, importing food is vital to provide a variety of food items as well an ensuring that certain items are available even during off seasons or other times of shortage. I also believe that being exposed to food items from other countries can add to our cultural diversity and enrich our culinary experiences.

In conclusion, while it might be beneficial for some nations to strive for food self-sufficiency, for many others this approach is unrealistic and could deprive a large part of the world of the broader benefits of global trade. Therefore, a balanced combination of domestic production and imports would be a more suitable option.

Teacher’s feedback:

This essay is a great example of Band 8 level writing.

Task Response: Band 8
The essay effectively addresses the task by presenting a clear opinion on the issue of food sovereignty. The writer discusses the advantages of local food production for national security and sustainable agricultural practices while acknowledging the limitations due to varying climates. The essay also recognises the importance of imports for variety, availability, and cultural enrichment. The opinion is well-developed and supported throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8
The essay is well-organised and coherent. It has a clear introduction, body paragraphs that present distinct points, and a concise conclusion that restates the opinion. Each paragraph discusses a specific aspect of the topic, and ideas are logically connected within and between paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices is effective in guiding the reader through the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 8

IELTS essay, topic: If a child commits a crime, should the child or the parents be punished? (discuss + opinion)

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 October 2023

This essay topic was seen in a recent IELTS test in India

Some people believe that if a child commits a crime he or she should be punished, while others think it is the child’s parents who should be punished. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Band 8 Essay

Opinions are divided on the topic of who should bear the most responsibility for crimes committed by minors. There are those who believe that the parents of children who commit crimes should be punished, while others disagree. I believe that while both arguments offer valid points, the decision ultimately depends on the individual circumstances surrounding each crime.

According to some people’s perspectives, all children regardless of their age should be held accountable for their actions, and that any punishment meted out to the child will serve as a deterrent to other. There is also the beneficial prospect of rehabilitation and instilling a sense of responsibility in the young offenders. Rehabilitation programs aimed at juvenile offenders can effectively reform their behaviour, thus making them responsible members of society.

Conversely, another perspective contends that that parents should be held responsible, especially if negligence or poor upbringing has played a significant role in the child’s actions. The cornerstone of this argument is that parents play a vital foundational role in shaping a child’s moral compass. When parents neglect their duties or act as an inappropriate role model, they indirectly contribute to a child’s deviant behaviour. For instance, there have been a number of recent cases where children had unrestricted access to firearms at home and committed accidental crimes, which points directly to parental negligence.

In my opinion, a blanket approach cannot be applied in this complex matter. While children must learn about the consequences of their actions, it is also vital to assess parental roles in individual cases. A collaborative system which evaluates both the child’s understanding and parental neglect would be most appropriate and beneficial for everyone involved.

Teacher’s feedback:

This essay is a great example of a Band 8 level. Overall, it demonstrates a strong command of language, effectively addresses the task, maintains coherence, and provides a thoughtful analysis of the topic.

Task Response: Band 8
The essay provides a well-rounded response to the given prompt. It discusses both sides of the argument — holding children accountable for their actions and holding parents responsible, and then provides a clear opinion that a case-by-case assessment is necessary. The essay doesn’t merely present the arguments but also evaluates them critically, fulfilling the task requirements comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8
The essay is well-structured with a clear introduction, body paragraphs discussing different perspectives, and a concluding paragraph summarising the writer’s opinion. The ideas are logically organised, and the essay progresses smoothly from one point to the next. Linking words and phrases are used effectively to connect sentences and paragraphs, ensuring coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 8
The essay demonstrates a strong command of vocabulary. There is effective use of a variety of words and phrases, showing precision and accuracy. For instance, phrases like “juvenile offenders”, “deviant behavior”, and “parental negligence” showcase a rich vocabulary. The writer also uses words like “cornerstone” and “blanket approach”, demonstrating a good range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8
The essay exhibits a high level of grammatical control. Complex sentence structures are used accurately, and there are no major grammatical errors that would impede understanding. The sentences are varied, indicating a good command of grammar.

Submit your essay for correction and find out how to improve your Writing score.

IELTS Speaking Test, Part 2 question with model answer: Describe a job that you think is interesting

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here is a Band 9 Speaking Part 2 answer for the cue card “Describe a job that you think is interesting”. This cue card has been seen recently in many test centres around the world. The answer below shows a good way to respond to this question.

Watch and listen in the video, or read the model answer below:

Speaking test

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a job that you think is interesting. You should say

– what job it is
– what skills are required for this job
– why you find this job interesting

and explain whether you would consider pursuing this job in the future.

Answer

I’d like to talk about the job of a travel blogger. You know, those folks who travel to different places, try out all sorts of food, and then share their experiences online.

Now, to be a good travel blogger, you need a mix of skills. First off, you’ve got to be a decent writer because you’re basically telling stories about your adventures. Good photography skills are a must too because people love to see what you’re experiencing. Being tech-savvy helps because you’ll be managing websites and social media.

What I find super interesting about this job is the sense of adventure. Imagine getting paid to explore new cities, try exotic foods, and meet interesting people. It’s like a never-ending vacation, but with a purpose! Plus, you get to share your passion with others and inspire them to travel and experience new things.

The idea of having the freedom to work from anywhere in the world also appeals to me. It’s not your typical 9-to-5 gig. You’re your own boss, and you set your own schedule.

As for whether I’d consider pursuing this job in the future, I’d say it’s a dream for many, but it’s not without challenges. It can be tough to establish yourself in such a competitive field, and it takes time to build an audience. Right now, I have other career goals, but who knows? Maybe one day, I’ll dip my toes into travel blogging as a side hustle.
